Who we are
Mid Surrey Mencap is a registered charity (1160493).

We provide support and recreational services for children and adults with learning disabilities in Epsom & Ewell, Banstead, and Mole Valley in Surrey.
The charity was founded by a group of parents in 1958 to meet the needs of their learning disabled children. At that time there were no services for special needs people other than institutions. Parents were concerned that their children were not having their needs understood and were being denied opportunities. The families of disabled children also needed greater support.

Our hall is safe and secure and fully accessible with an overhead hoist and changing table. Our services are offered at affordable rates so that everyone can join (our Wednesday club is £2.00 per night).

We can also offer support and advice to people with learning disabilities, their parents and carers. We advocate on members' behalf at local and national level and can put you in touch with relevant contacts.
In June 2018 Mid Surrey Mencap celebrated 60 years of serving the learning disabled community. We are still run by volunteers.
The charity is governed by trustees who meet monthly as a committee. Between us we have a wealth of experience in learning disabilities.
What we do
Our aim is to provide a fun, all inclusive space for adults and children with learning disabilities to socialise and learn new skills. We run an evening club every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month and day services for adults five days a week, Monday to Friday. We also run social events throughout the year such as our Christmas party, Valentine's disco, Summer barbecues and quiz nights.
We want to ensure that people with learning disabilities in our area have a social space where they can enjoy themselves. Our charity provides a vital stopgap in the community, as Government resources are increasingly stretched and services closed.

Funding
Mid Surrey Mencap is an independent, local charity. We are responsible for all of our own funding. Although we are affiliated with National Mencap, we receive no funding from them.

The majority of our funds are raised through our members, local businesses and local residents. These efforts include our infamous jumble sales, homemade produce and local events. We are seeking to expand our fundraising by applying to national and local grants, but these are in hot demand due to the increasing cuts to social budgets under austerity measures.

All of our funds are invested in the services we offer. Mid Surrey Mencap charity is run by our trustees who are all volunteers. We employ four part-time employees who run the day service, and a part-time employee who overseas the management of the hall. Our latest audited accounts are easily accessible via the Charity Commission website.
